Two local 4-H members proved that a little patience, persistence, and plenty of watering can yield big results—literally. This year, Graham County 4-H members Kenlyn Powell, age 10, and Lawrence Powell, age 6, were recognized for their success in the annual extension Giant Pumpkin Contest.
Lawrence’s pumpkin tipped the scale at 294 pounds, earning him the First Place Youth Giant Pumpkin Award, while Kenlyn’s came in close behind at 274 pounds, earning Second Place. Both youth are members of the Graham County 4-H.
Gardening projects encourage youth to learn not only about horticulture but also about record-keeping, problem-solving, and responsibility. Throughout the summer, Kenlyn & Lawrence tracked the growth of their pumpkins, adjusted watering schedules, and monitored for pests and disease.
