(Updated: Aug. 19, 2024, 8:05 a.m.)

N.C. Cooperative Extension, Graham County Center successfully completed its second annual tomato taste test at the Graham County Farmers Market on Saturday, August 17th.  Many excited tomato enthusiasts lined up to try 15 varieties of tomato, all grown in Graham County.  The results of the test were as follows:

  1. Ruby Orr – 19 votes
  2. Carolina Gold – 11 votes
  3. Big Boy – 9 votes
  4. Hazel Creek – 8 votes
  5. Amish Paste/Sart Roloise (tie) – 6 votes
  6. Morphew Pink/Gold Medal/Pink Oxheart/Improved Parks Whopper (tie) – 5 votes
  7. Stripey – 4 votes
  8. Berkley Tie Dyed Pink/Ananas Noire (tie) – 3 votes
  9. Lemon Boy/Copper River (tie) – 2 votes

In addition to having fun and building community development, the tasting exposed participants to different varieties of tomatoes that might provide better flavor, texture and growing ability.

Cooperative Extension would like to extend a special “Thank You!” to Raymond Norton, Jean Taylor, and Mike Williams for their donation of tomatoes.  Without these folks, our taste test would not have been possible.
